History of the holiday
Malaysia Day emerged after the unification of Malaya, Sabah, Sarawak, and initially Singapore (which left the Federation in 1965) into a single Federation of Malaysia. The holiday reminds citizens of the importance of solidarity between states, the shared history, and the development of the country. September 16 is considered the official date of Malaysia’s formation in 1963.
