The Annunciation of the Blessed Virgin Mary is one of the main Christian holidays, celebrated on April 7 (according to the Julian calendar). This day is dedicated to the memory of the Gospel event, when the Archangel Gabriel appeared to the Virgin Mary and announced to her that she would become the mother of Jesus Christ, the Son of God.

The meaning of the holiday
The Annunciation marks the beginning of the incarnation of the Son of God and the implementation of the Divine plan for the salvation of mankind. This is a day of joy and hope, emphasizing the special role of the Virgin Mary in the history of salvation.

Traditions of the holiday
Divine services. Solemn liturgies are held in Orthodox and Catholic churches. Flowers are brought to the service as a symbol of purity and joy.

Blessing of bread and grain. In some regions, bread and grain, which are considered symbols of well-being, are blessed on this day.

Freeing the birds. In the Orthodox tradition, there is a custom of releasing birds into the wild, symbolizing liberation from sin and the joy of the Good News.

A ban on hard work. It is believed that on this day one should not engage in heavy physical labor, especially women, in order to honor the purity and humility of the Virgin Mary.

Sowing rituals. In rural areas, the beginning of spring work is often associated with the Annunciation. It was believed that grain planted on this day would yield a good harvest.
