On June 27, 1997, in Moscow, the "General Agreement on Peace and National Accord in Tajikistan" was signed between the government and the United Tajik Opposition. This document ended a five-year armed conflict that claimed tens of thousands of lives and devastated the country's economy.
National Unity Day was officially established in 1998.
