Independence Day of the Republic of Tajikistan is celebrated annually on September 9. It is the main national holiday of the country, symbolizing the sovereignty and independence of the Tajik people.

History of the holiday
After the collapse of the USSR, on September 9, 1991, the Supreme Council of the Tajik SSR declared the independence of the republic. From this moment, a new stage began in the history of the country, associated with the formation of state institutions and the strengthening of national identity.

Significance of the holiday
Independence Day plays an important role for the citizens of Tajikistan:

* In 2011, Tajikistan celebrated the 20th anniversary of independence with especially large-scale events, including the opening of new facilities and monuments.
* On Dousti Square in Dushanbe, the main celebrations traditionally take place, attended by the country’s top leaders.
* The symbols of the holiday are the national flag and coat of arms, which on this day decorate streets, buildings and squares.
