National Heimlich Maneuver Day
June 1, Sunday

Who is Heimlich?
Dr. Henry Heimlich was an American physician who developed the technique that bears his name in 1974. The Heimlich maneuver became one of the most effective methods for relieving choking and has since become a standard part of emergency medical practice worldwide.
Purpose of the holiday
This day is designed to raise awareness about the dangers of choking and the importance of knowing basic first aid techniques. It also serves as a reminder that anyone can save a life if they know how to act properly in an emergency situation.
How this day is celebrated
* Holding first aid workshops and training sessions
* Demonstrating the Heimlich maneuver in schools, workplaces, and medical institutions
* Publishing instructional videos and infographics on social media
* Distributing leaflets and brochures with instructions on how to respond to choking
* Highlighting cases of lives being saved using the Heimlich maneuver
How to perform the Heimlich maneuver
This maneuver is used when a person's airway is blocked and they are unable to speak, cough, or breathe. The steps are as follows:
* Stand behind the person and wrap your arms around them
* Make a fist with one hand and place it slightly above the navel, in the center of the abdomen
* Cover the fist with your other hand
* Press inward and upward sharply and forcefully (toward the diaphragm)
* Repeat the thrusts until the object is expelled or the person begins to breathe
Important to remember
* The maneuver is not performed on infants under 1 year old (a different technique is used)
* For pregnant or obese people, the maneuver is performed on the chest
* If the person loses consciousness, call emergency services and begin CPR
Interesting facts
* The Heimlich maneuver is estimated to have saved hundreds of thousands of lives worldwide
* Dr. Heimlich himself used his maneuver at the age of 96 to save a person
* The American Red Cross recommends it as part of basic first aid
