National Pet Fire Safety Day
July 15, Tuesday

Who initiated the holiday:
The holiday was established by the American Kennel Club (AKC) in cooperation with ADT Security Services. The goal is to help people understand how to prevent fires caused by pets and how to protect them during a fire.
Purpose of the holiday:
National Pet Fire Safety Day aims to:
* prevent house fires related to animals;
* educate owners about proper safety precautions;
* create evacuation plans considering pets;
* promote the installation of fire alarms and stickers indicating "pets in the house."
How it is celebrated:
Here are some recommendations to observe this day effectively:
* install special fire safety stickers on windows and doors indicating pets are in the house;
* do not leave pets unattended near stoves, candles, or heaters;
* create and rehearse an evacuation plan considering where pets might be;
* keep carriers, leashes, and documents in an accessible place;
* install cameras or monitoring systems if the pet is often home alone.
Interesting fact:
According to the U.S. Fire Administration, about 1,000 house fires annually are caused by pets — most often due to stoves and appliances being left on. But thanks to preventive measures and proper actions, lives of both animals and people can be saved.
