See Day, also known as "Umi no Hi" (海の日) or "Marine Day," is a national holiday in Japan celebrated to give thanks for the blessings of the ocean and to recognize the importance of the sea to Japan as a maritime nation. It also serves to encourage public interest in the ocean and maritime activities.

Date of Celebration
Originally established in 1996, See Day was first observed on July 20. However, due to the implementation of the "Happy Monday System" (a law designed to create more three-day weekends), the holiday was moved to the third Monday of July starting in 2003. This change allows for a long weekend and promotes domestic travel and leisure.

Historical Background
The roots of See Day trace back to 1876, when Emperor Meiji returned to Yokohama by ship after a voyage to the Tohoku region. July 20 was later designated as a day to commemorate this event and Japan’s maritime heritage. Over time, it evolved into a national holiday to honor the broader significance of the sea.

Ways See Day is Celebrated
See Day is marked by various events and activities across Japan, including:

- Maritime festivals and fireworks displays in coastal towns and cities
- Educational events at aquariums and maritime museums
- Beach clean-up campaigns and environmental awareness programs
- Boat parades and sailing demonstrations
- Family outings to the beach or seaside parks

Significance of the Holiday
As an island nation, Japan has a deep connection to the sea. The ocean plays a vital role in the country’s economy, culture, and daily life. See Day is a time for Japanese people to reflect on the importance of the ocean, promote marine conservation, and celebrate the beauty and bounty of the sea.

Modern Observances
In recent years, See Day has also become a platform for raising awareness about marine pollution and climate change. Environmental groups and local governments often use the holiday to promote sustainable practices and educate the public about protecting marine ecosystems.
