Palau Independence Day is celebrated annually on October 1. This is the main national holiday of the country, established to commemorate the attainment of independence in 1994. On this day, Palau officially became a sovereign state after the conclusion of the UN Trust Territory period under the administration of the United States.

Historical context

* After World War II, Palau, as part of the Trust Territory of the Pacific Islands, was under U.S. administration.
* In 1980, Palau adopted a Constitution declaring it a free state in association with the United States.
* On October 1, 1994, the Compact of Free Association was signed and came into effect, formalizing Palau's independence and its membership in the United Nations.
