Independence Day
October 3, Friday

Historical context
After World War I, the territory of modern Iraq came under the British mandate established by the League of Nations in 1920. In 1921, a monarchy was created under King Faisal I. Despite formal self-government, the United Kingdom maintained strong influence over the country’s domestic and foreign policy.
On October 3, 1932, Iraq officially gained independence and became the first Arab state to join the League of Nations as a sovereign one.
How it is celebrated
Today, the holiday has a state and patriotic character:
* official ceremonies and speeches by government representatives take place,
* cultural events dedicated to the country’s history are organized,
* patriotic songs are performed and concerts are held,
* schools and universities pay attention to the historical events of 1932.
