Nyerere Day is a national holiday in Tanzania, celebrated annually on October 14 in memory of Julius Kambarage Nyerere, the first president of the country and an outstanding African leader.

Historical significance
Julius Nyerere (1922–1999) was the founder of independent Tanzania and one of the key figures of the African liberation movement. He led the struggle for the independence of Tanganyika from British colonial rule and became the first prime minister, and later president, of the country after independence was declared in 1961.

After the union of Tanganyika and Zanzibar in 1964, Nyerere became the first president of the United Republic of Tanzania. He remained in this position until 1985, actively promoting ideas of unity, social justice, and African socialism — a policy known as ujamaa.

Significance of the holiday
Nyerere Day is dedicated to the memory of this statesman, philosopher, and humanist, who is called the "Father of the Nation." It reminds people of his contribution to building national unity and developing African identity.

Celebration traditions
On this day:
– official ceremonies and wreath-laying at Nyerere monuments are held;
– lectures and conferences about his life and political legacy take place;
– schools and universities hold readings of poems and essays dedicated to his ideas;
– documentaries and programs about his activities are broadcast.

Modern celebration
Nyerere Day is an official public holiday in Tanzania. It is a time to reflect on national identity, social justice, and the values that Nyerere upheld during his life. His memory continues to play an important role in shaping civic awareness and patriotism in the country.
