Although iced tea had been consumed in the U.S. since the early 19th century, its mass popularity began in 1904 at the World’s Fair in St. Louis. In the hot weather, tea merchant Richard Blechynden offered visitors chilled tea, which caused a sensation and marked the beginning of the drink's widespread popularity across the country.
