Memorial Day, or Hyeonchung-il (현충일), is observed annually on June 6 in South Korea. This national day is dedicated to the memory of military personnel and civilians who died in the line of duty during wars and conflicts, including the Korean War (1950–1953) and other military actions.

Purpose of the Day
Memorial Day serves as an important reminder of the sacrifices made for the country's independence and security. It has several key purposes:

* to honor those who died for freedom and peace;
* to express gratitude to veterans and their families;
* to strengthen patriotism among citizens;
* to remind society of the cost of peace and stability.

How Memorial Day is Observed
In South Korea, the day is marked by official ceremonies and a moment of silence. It is customary to:

* hold a state ceremony at the National Cemetery Memorial in Seoul;
* lower national flags to half-mast;
* observe a moment of silence exactly at 10:00 a.m. local time;
* organize remembrance events in schools, organizations, and families.

Symbols and Traditions
The holiday has its own symbols and established traditions:

* the poppy flower — a symbol of remembrance, often used in decorations and clothing;
* visiting memorials and graves of the fallen;
* participating in educational and patriotic campaigns;
* highlighting veterans’ and heroes’ stories in the media.

Historical Background
Memorial Day was officially established in 1956, three years after the end of the Korean War. Initially, it focused primarily on military casualties, but over the years, its scope expanded to include other citizens who died in the line of duty.

Interesting Fact
At 10:00 a.m., a nationwide siren sounds for a moment of silence. Traffic stops, pedestrians bow their heads in respect, and government offices temporarily suspend operations.
