National Sunscreen Day is celebrated annually on May 27 and is part of National Sunscreen Week in the United States. The purpose of this day is to raise awareness about the importance of using sunscreen to protect the skin from harmful ultraviolet (UV) rays.

History of National Sunscreen Day
In 1974, scientists first discovered the thinning of the ozone layer, which naturally protects the Earth from UV radiation. This discovery drew attention to the need for skin protection from the sun. In 1992, a study conducted in Australia showed that regular sunscreen use could prevent the development of melanoma. In 2009, the International Agency for Research on Cancer classified UV radiation from tanning beds as one of the most dangerous substances for humans. A 2013 study showed that most people do not apply sunscreen generously enough, even if it has a high SPF.

Why It’s Important to Use Sunscreen
Sunscreen helps prevent:

* Sunburns
* Premature skin aging
* Skin cancer

Ultraviolet rays are present year-round, even on cloudy days, and can penetrate through windows. Therefore, it’s important to use sunscreen daily, regardless of weather conditions.

How to Use Sunscreen Properly

* Choose sunscreen with SPF 30 or higher and broad-spectrum protection from UVA and UVB rays.
* Apply sunscreen 15–30 minutes before going outdoors.
* Reapply every 2 hours, especially after swimming or sweating.
* Use enough sunscreen: about one ounce (30 ml) to cover the entire body of an adult.
* Don’t rely solely on sunscreen; wear protective clothing, hats, and sunglasses.

Myths About Sunscreen
There are several common myths about sunscreen:

* "I don’t need sunscreen if it’s cloudy outside."
* "One application of sunscreen lasts all day."
* "My makeup with SPF provides enough protection."
* "I don’t need sunscreen because I have dark skin."

It’s important to debunk these myths and use sunscreen correctly.

How to Observe National Sunscreen Day
On this day, you can:

* Apply sunscreen before going outside.
* Share information about the importance of sun protection with friends and family.
* Check your skin for any changes and consult a dermatologist if necessary.

By observing this day, we remind ourselves and others of the importance of taking care of our skin and preventing diseases caused by UV exposure.
