Absinthe was first created in Switzerland in the late 18th century, but became especially popular in France in the 19th century. The drink is made from wormwood, anise, and other herbs, and is often associated with artists and writers such as Van Gogh, Degas, and Baudelaire, who used it as a source of inspiration. However, due to its high alcohol content and the alleged toxic effects of wormwood, absinthe was banned in many countries in the early 20th century.
Since 2007, many countries, including the United States, have lifted restrictions on the sale of absinthe, which has contributed to its revival and popularity.
