Memorial Day is a federal holiday in the United States dedicated to honoring and remembering the men and women of the military who have died in service to their country. It is a solemn occasion that also marks the unofficial start of summer in the U.S.

History of Memorial Day
Memorial Day originated after the American Civil War and was initially known as Decoration Day. It was a time when citizens would decorate the graves of fallen soldiers with flowers, flags, and wreaths. The holiday gradually evolved to honor all American military personnel who died in all wars.

In 1971, Memorial Day was declared a national holiday by an act of Congress and was set to be observed on the last Monday in May.

Traditions and Observances
Common ways Americans observe Memorial Day include:

- Visiting cemeteries and memorials to pay respects to fallen soldiers
- Participating in or watching parades that often feature veterans and military personnel
- Holding moments of silence, particularly at 3:00 p.m. local time, known as the National Moment of Remembrance
- Displaying the American flag at half-staff until noon
- Attending religious services or community events honoring military service

Memorial Day vs. Veterans Day
It’s important to distinguish Memorial Day from Veterans Day. Memorial Day honors those who died in military service, while Veterans Day (observed on November 11) honors all who have served in the U.S. Armed Forces, both living and deceased.

Modern Celebrations
In addition to solemn remembrances, Memorial Day has also become associated with:

- Family gatherings and barbecues
- Outdoor activities such as picnics, hiking, and boating
- Retail sales and promotional events
- The opening of public pools and the beginning of summer vacation season

Memorial Day is both a day of remembrance and a time for Americans to reflect on the cost of freedom. While many enjoy the long weekend with leisure activities, the core purpose of the holiday remains to honor and remember those who gave their lives in service to the United States.
